SEND Backpacks
These backpacks can provide sensory support or different ways of exploring the VG&M. Inside each backpack there are focus tools, sensory aids and a PECS-style visit planning board. The backpacks are part of the VG&M’s commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI).
These are FREE to borrow from the Welcome Desk. You will be asked to sign out the backpack and leave a form of ID such as passport, driving license or credit card. ID will be stored securely and returned when the backpack is returned and contents checked.
Pre-arrival
We are at the top of Brownlow Hill, a 15-minute walk from Lime Street and Liverpool Central Rail Stations

Arrival and car parking facilities
We do not have a dedicated car park but car users may use the University's visitor car park on Mount Pleasant, 200m away from the VG&M. There is a charge for use of the visitor car park.
The route from the car park is along a smooth, flat and level pavement with pelican crossings across Brownlow Hill.
Visitors, including coach parties, may be dropped off on Brownlow Hill where there is a dropped kerb.

Main entrance, reception and ticketing area
The main entrance has level access and automatic sliding doors.
Reception has a low-level counter.
Support dogs are welcome and can be provided with a bowl of water.
FOR THE SAFETY AND COMFORT OF ALL OUR GUESTS: Backpacks and bags of any kind are SUBJECT TO INSPECTION prior to entry.
Large bags must be deposited in our designated cloakroom.
Public areas - hall, stairs, landing, corridors etc
There is stair and lift access to the galleries on the first floor and the museum on the second floor, along with the Leggate Theatre.
The floor is marble and even on the ground floor.
Stairs are concrete, evenly spaced and broad, with handrail on the right as you ascend.
Gallery floors are parquet wood and level.
Lighting in the Tate Hall and in some of the galleries is dim to preserve exhibits.
The lift to all floors has Braille-labelled controls.
Quiet area
A quiet area can be located on the first floor outside of the main toilets.
There is a small sofa and a bookshelf in this area for you to sit and relax.

Public areas - Waterhouse Cafe
The cafe is on the ground floor and is fully accessible. All seating is on one level and waitress service is in operation between 11.30am and 2.30pm, or upon request.
Please be aware that the cafe can be very busy between the hours of 12pm and 2pm. Quieter periods are generally 9am-11am and 2pm-5pm.

Public toilets
On the ground floor to the right of reception, through double doors and then to your left, there are public toilets, including one accessible toilet with an alarm cord and handrails.
On the first floor there are male, female and accessible with alarm cord, toilets with a baby changing facility in the female toilet.
On the second floor adjacent to the Leggate Theatre there are male, female and accessible toilets, again with alarm call system.
Shop
The shop is situated adjacent to reception, where there is a low-level counter.
Additional information
Staff are trained in emergency evacuation procedures, including use of an evacuation chair for mobility impaired visitors.
