Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775 – 1851) is widely considered to be Britain’s greatest painter. He was hugely influential on art in this country and beyond, experimenting and pushing artistic boundaries. He is especially known for his ability to instil drama into a composition and capture atmospheric weather effects. This exhibition commemorates the 250th anniversary of his birth on 23 April 2025.

Turner worked at a time now considered the ‘golden age’ of British watercolour painting when a generation of major talent emerged.  The individual artists crossed paths in varied ways and this exhibition investigates links between Turner, Thomas Girtin, John Sell Cotman, David Cox Snr, Samuel Prout and many others.
