Wildlife artist and naturalist John James Audubon (1785–1851) is best known for his masterpiece The Birds of America, a landmark in natural history illustration.

In 1826, he travelled to Liverpool to raise funds for the project, staying with the influential Rathbone family and exhibiting at the Liverpool Royal Institution.
