Having a Look by Jim Russell, 1972
Through this collection of paintings, we invite you to reflect on the colour green. Its meanings vary across cultures and periods, but in contemporary Britain, green is most often associated with nature and environmental awareness.
Spending time in green spaces—whether in the open countryside, shaded woodlands, local parks, or even your own garden—has been shown to offer significant health benefits. It can enhance physical and mental wellbeing for people of all ages, helping to reduce stress and blood pressure, improve sleep, and encourage more positive thinking.
The artists featured in this display each had their reasons for exploring greenery in their work. John Nash, for instance, turned to landscape painting as a form of therapy to heal from trauma. Caroline Emily Gray Hill found inspiration in the flowers near her home, continuing to paint well into later life. Meanwhile, Jim Russell, an environmentalist, expressed his values by creating art on recycled materials.
