The Meroë Head of Augustus Symposium

The Victoria Gallery and Museum is hosting a Symposium to celebrate the arrival of the Meroë Head of Augustus.
The Symposium will be an informative day, providing fascinating insights into the unique and extraordinary history of the Meroë Head of Augustus. There will be talks from gallery curators and experts in ancient history.
The bronze head depicts Rome’s first emperor Augustus and is remarkably well preserved. It had survived for centuries underground until it was discovered by The University of Liverpool’s Professor John Garstang in 1910.
Nicola Euston, Museums and Galleries Manager at the University of Liverpool, said: “Augustus’ head has a fascinating story to tell; it was the 35th object included in the BBC Radio 4 series ‘A History of the World in 100 objects’. We are beyond delighted to see The Meroë Head of Augustus return to the University, and honoured to be exhibiting it at the VG&M.”
The Meroë Head of Augustus is on display in gallery 4 of the VG&M, from 3 March - 30 June 2018.
